Rakhi

I meant to write this yesterday, but through all the animal activist duties I could not catch the appropriate frame of mind. Yesterday was Rakhi, it’s an Indian festival that celebrates the love between a brother and a sister. I do not have the ability to articulate what he means to me. Sometimes people look at us and say how lucky we are to have this bond. I suppose there is an element of chance, if that is such a thing. But what most people miss is the amount of effort and energy that goes into creating this beautiful friendship. There is heart break and pain and anger and misunderstanding and disappointment and disquiet and irritation, just as in every relationship. But we don’t let that dictate terms to us for we are constantly meditating, evolving, making amends, subjecting ourselves to scrutiny, personally and together. And more than love it is awareness that keeps us together. And for that I will always be grateful.
